The little blue pill has been nicknamed the "weekend pill," but with its nickname being its brand name. "It's the moment when the moment's right for the moment in our lives," says John Doe. He's an experienced sexologist and infertility specialist in Seattle. The FDA has warned that the drug is unsafe to use. The label says "off-label" use of this medication is illegal, with warnings that users should not take it more often than directed.
Steroid-free medications, such as hydrocodone, may be safe when used responsibly. But there's a problem. Some patients have reported a sudden onset of severe headaches and nausea.
In recent years, a number of pharmaceutical companies have started marketing and selling the popular drug, called Cialis, which treats erectile dysfunction. "It's a big mistake, and they should not be taking it," says Dr. Robert F. Leuchtmann, medical director at Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. "It's like going from a drug that is sold over the counter to a drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction and that's used as a medication."
The FDA has not approved a number of other drugs that treat erectile dysfunction. These include the anti-cholesterol drug, diet pills, and herbal supplements, like St. John's wort. And there are no drug names that claim that Cialis helps with erectile dysfunction. The only other drug that says "off-label" uses of this medication are the prescription drug, Viagra, and some herbal supplements. (In fact, the FDA says that these products are intended for use by men only and only on prescription grounds.)
That's why the FDA is now warning about the risk of erectile dysfunction with any drug or product.
If you have erectile dysfunction, it's important to talk to your doctor. The FDA can't guarantee that the drug is safe to use. But there's no question about that.
It's not just about erectile dysfunction. A study published in the journal Urology found that a third of men with ED experienced side effects such as headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and indigestion.
And when a drug is used to treat the problem, it is often used responsibly, according to the FDA. "The FDA is the most informed agency in the world, and it is not only informed about the problem but it has a long list of safety and efficacy data for the drug," says Dr. F. Gary W. Smith, a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan Health Sciences Center and coauthor of the study.
He says that "it's very easy for the FDA to find a safe and effective treatment." But there is no way to know what's in that drug or the ingredients that it contains. And the FDA has a long list of safety information for the drugs.
That's why you need to talk to your doctor. The FDA doesn't have to be your doctor or nurse. But you need to speak with your doctor first.
